EMPD officers were out in full force last weekend in the Germiston and Brakpan areas, targeting speeding motorists.
On January 28, between 4am and 11am, in both directions on the R23/Heidelberg Road near Ouhout, in Brakpan, EMPD officers detained nine speedsters, including two who had allegedly had one too many, for exceeding the enforced speed limit of 80km/h.
“At 5.07am officers battled to stop a VW Polo driven by a 25-year-old allegedly intoxicated male for clocking 156km/h, who alleged that he was on his way home,” said Acting Lieut-Col Kobeli Mokheseng, spokesman for the EMPD.
“Another VW Polo driver, also aged 25, was stopped after he was clocked doing 128km/h at 5.27am.
“He was also allegedly intoxicated.
“Besides the main charge, both drivers are also facing driving while under the influence of alcohol charges.”
Other lawbreakers were caught doing speeds of between 117 and 155km/h.
Meanwhile, in the Germiston area, on January 29, between 4am and 11am, on the N3 south highway near the Rand Airport off-ramp, nine speedsters, including an allegedly tipsy one, were booked for disregarding the 120km/h speed limit.
“At about 5.20am, a 40-year-old male driving a BMW sedan, who had no reason for speeding, clocked 203km/h before he was intercepted.
“A 45-year-old allegedly tipsy male, claiming that he was cruising home in his BMW sedan doing 164km/h, bonuses with an additional charge of being intoxicated, while other offenders were caught doing between 166 and 193km/h,” said Mokheseng.
All the arrested people were detained and charged with reckless and negligent driving at the Brakpan and Germiston police stations, respectively.
Suspects will appear in the Brakpan and Germiston Magistrate’s Courts soon.
