Man and woman arrested for money laundering

Home Affairs official documents, asylum documents and 34 ID books found in vehicle in Lambton.

Officers from the Germiston Police Station got more than they bargained for when they pulled over a suspicious looking vehicle in Lambton, last Tuesday.

“The officers were patrolling the Lambton area when they noticed a suspicious looking vehicle,” explained Capt George Raphulu, head of communications for the Germiston SAPS.

Officers searched the vehicle and its 37-year-old male and 34-year-old female occupants, and were surprised to find official Home Affairs documents, asylum documents, 34 ID books and an undisclosed amount of cash.

“During questioning the suspects could not explanation clearly where they had obtained the documents and cash, or where they were taking the items to,” said Raphulu.

The pair were arrested and taken to the Germiston Police Station where they were charged with money laundering.

The accused will appear in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court soon.
