Construction of the metro’s state-of-the-art building, which will house some of the municipality’s departments, is taking shape in the Germiston CBD.
The building, which, once it is finished, will stand as a modern landmark of Germiston, is rising on the corner of Spilsbury and Queen streets where the old SAAME building once stood.
The old SAAME building stood for over 50 years.
It will be used as the new office block for the metro and will accommodate 235 metro officials.
The building will also house the Germiston Customer Care Centre where residents will get all services provided by the metro through face-to-face assistance by the officials.
The construction of the building was started on March 1 and it is expected to be completed by June 30, next year.
It entailed demolition of some parts of the old building, while retaining and repairing all that had heritage significance in line with the heritage resources legislation.
Some roads have been temporarily closed due to the construction, and traffic has been redirected into alternative access streets in the Germiston CBD.

The construction of the building is part of the Germiston Urban Renewal, which together with Kempton Park and Boksburg, are parts of the metro’s economic triangle.
Around 95 per cent of the metro’s revenue is drawn from these three nodes and there is a high concentration of industrial activity in these areas.
The project aims to add to further business confidence in the area, showing the private sector that things are turning for better.
This development is in line with the metro’s mission of providing sustainable and people-centred urban developmental services.
Among the departments that will be housed at the SAAME building are Water and Sanitation, Roads and Stormwater, Energy and Electricity, City Planning, Human Settlements and Customer Relations Management (CRM).
