During a special stop-and-search operation in the Makause informal settlement, last weekend, police closed down three illegal taverns and confiscated thousands of litres of alcohol.
The owners of the taverns, aged between 26 and 38, were all arrested on a charge of dealing in liquor without a licence.

“At each of the taverns, the owner was asked for a valid liquor licence and if they were unable to provide one, they were arrested and their establishment was closed.
“We warn the community of Primrose that selling liquor without a valid licence is illegal,” said Sgt Styles Maome, communications officer for the Primrose police.
The suspects were taken to the Primrose Police Station where they were later released on a warning after paying an admission of guilt fine.

“We will continue to conduct similar operations week in and week out until we win the war against the illegal sale of alcohol and gender-based violence in the informal settlements,” said Maome.
