Doing it for their grand children
Phele, the Vosloorus Cricket Club (VCC) development coach, is developing a strategy to pass on the cricket knowledge to grandparents.
The Vosloorus cricket club’s trainer Isaac Phele is committed to developing and sustaining the knowledge of cricket in Vosloorus. This was after he recognised the undying dedication to cricket by the young cricketers.
In an interview with Kathorus MAIL at the Vosloorus Stadium where Vosloorus Basadi Cricket Club(VBCC) train between Monday and Friday, Phele said he did not want the light of cricket to fade away from the young stars since they were the future of township cricket.

“To avoid the light from fading away, I decided to start the new initiative – where the Vosloorus Basadi Cricket Club (VBCC) will pass on the knowledge of cricket to their grandparents so that they (grandparents) in turn can pass it on to their children so that the love of cricket will not die, but sustained among the younger generations. He argued that grandparents spent a lot of time with children, as their nurturer.
“Grandparents spend more time with their grandchildren since their parents spend most of their time at work, so it makes sense to impart cricket skills on to grandmothers,” said Phele.
He said to teach grandparents will not only assist their grandchildren to have a grasp of cricket but will in the long run help VCC as well.
“Their knowledge of cricket (VBCC) is amazing. The only thing I had to teach them was a few basics such as body movement, hand coordination, catching and throwing, as well as batting and fielding,” said Phele.
The VBCC initiative has been ongoing since last year. It does not only help grandparents gain cricket knowledge but it also keeps them fit.
One of the VBCC players, Suzan Selwane (50), said they were excited about the initiative.

“It helps us a lot as it gives us an opportunity to compete with learners from different primary schools,” said Selwane.
The VBCC has been competing with learners from Nageng Primary School and Zimele Primary School, and have won their games. The games were held on March 20 at the Vosloorus Stadium.
