Sport-lovers celebrate Human Rights Day

Members of the community, young and old, came in their numbers to celebrate the day.

As their means of celebrating Human Rights Day, Egagasini Children and Youth Foundation (ECYF) held different sporting events at the Sam Ntuli Sport Complex in Thokoza.

Soccer, a 5km fun walk, a 15km run, netball, cricket, volleyball events began on March 21 and ran until March 24.

Fanie Banda, co-founder of ECYF, said the purpose of the day was to teach members of the community about human rights.

“At the same time, to raise funds to assist underprivileged students from our community. In the long run, we will use the funds to buy sanitary towels to donate to schools,” said Banda.

“The main reason we chose sport rather than music is that sport can change people’s mindset. After the gym, people’s minds are refreshed and they tend to have that winning mentality that brings about a positive attitude.”

Results of the games from the finals are as follows:

• Soccer: Hyper Academy won against K1 Stars 2-1.

• Volleyball: Set to Kill defeated K1 Wolves 30-25.

• Netball: Kathorus Netball Team defeated Kings Netball Team 46-35.

• Cricket: Thokoza Super Kings defeated Katlehong Cricket Club by 1 run.

• Five-kilometre walk (open age category): Won by Patrick Mokgatle.

• Fifteen-kilometre run (open age category): Sifiso Ndlela from Ubuhle Athletic Club won.

• Children’s race: Buhle Ngoaza won.

The soccer, netball and volleyball winners received sport kits, gold medals and trophies. Second place finishers received silver medals.

The first three finishers of the fun run and walk received gold medals and the rest received bronze medals.

All participants received discount vouchers from the sponsors – Decathlon.
