Opposition party calls for tolerance during election campaigns
The DA claimed that when Mokone asked for his shirt back, the ANC members intimidated him and told him not return to Khatlamping as it was ANC territory and not for a white party.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Ekurhuleni has called for tolerance between political parties in their electoral campaigning as the country moves closer to the national and provincial elections on May 8.
On Sunday, March 31, a case of intimidation was opened against ANC members of Khatlamping after the DA accused them of forcing a DA member, Alfred Mokone, to take off his blue DA shirt and ordered him to replace it with an ANC one.
They then allegedly proceeded to tell Mokone that if they saw him again with a DA shirt, they would beat him.

The DA claimed that when Mokone asked for his shirt back, the ANC members intimidated him and told him not return to Khatlamping as it was ANC territory and not for a white party.
“This kind of intimidation is unacceptable and goes against our country’s freedom of expression defined in our Bill of Rights. Any individual has the freedom to choose which political party they want to vote for or be affiliated with,” wrote the DA spokesperson.
He added that the DA in Ekurhuleni strongly condemns these acts of intimidation and encourages the ANC and all other political parties to exercise tolerance and to respect the Electoral Commission of SA’s (IEC) code of conduct which they are signatories to.
