Learners from 12 primary and high schools from the northern, eastern and southern districts of Johannesburg travelled to the Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg to celebrate National Water Week recently.
Katlehong Secondary School and Germiston South Primary School were among the schools chosen to take part in the event, themed Leaving No One Behind, Water for All.

The event, which is in its seventh year, is held by the hotel in partnership with the Department of Water and Sanitation, the Gauteng Department of Education and the metro.
It aims to raise awareness on the importance of water conservation and sustainably managing freshwater resources amid the global concern over water scarcity.
Learners were tasked with giving a presentation on two water conservation topics, namely what can be done to ensure there is water provision for all and whether water and sanitation service delivery is on track to meet 2030 targets.
“Only three per cent of the Earth’s water is freshwater, and a further two per cent is tied up as ice in glaciers at the poles,” said Birchwood Hotel’s digital marketing manager, Greg Hoffmann.
“This leaves just one per cent available for usage for humans and with climate change, higher living standards and resource-intensive farming it is more important than ever to address our water use.
“It is important for us to collaborate with government to create awareness of the challenges facing freshwater resources and the conservation of water within businesses and communities.”

Event facilitator at the Birchwood Hotel Mercy Mpofu said after the event, “All the schools that joined us put their utmost effort into showing an understanding of the water scarcity, as well as thinking out of the box with regards to solutions.
“We thoroughly enjoyed listening and being part of teaching future generations about water conservation.”
