Five lives lost at Madala Hostel
Five people were shot dead in a shooting incident at Madala Hostel in Thokoza on May 9.
Thokoza SAPS communication officer Capt Buyisile Mvelase said the incident happened around 6 pm.
She said the seven male victims were in a queue at a food stall in the hostel’s Block C when the attack took place.
“They gunshots were fired towards their direction. Five of them were shot while the other two escaped the gunfire. “Three were declared dead on the scene by the paramedics, while the two died later at the hospital,” said Mvelase.
A hostel dweller who commented on conditions of anonymity said the victims were from Ulundi in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN).
“It is alleged that prior to the shooting incident on May 9, one person from Nquthu, also in KZN, was shot dead multiple times by people from Ulundi on election day, May 8,” said the source.
The situation is still tense at the hostel, with claims that some hostel residents are in hiding.
