Due to a high rise in the number of hijacking and attempted hijacking cases in their policing precinct, the Elsburg SAPS have shared several safety tips.
Residents are urged to use these tips so that they do not become victims of these types of crimes.
• Change your routine.
• Do not leave or arrive home at the same time every day.
• If possible, inform someone at home to open the gate for you while you are a few metres away.
• Be vigilant, drive around your residence and check if there are any suspicious people or motor vehicles or people loitering near your home.
Should you notice any suspicious vehicles or people loitering near your home, go to your nearest police station and report these suspicious activities.
Residents are also encouraged to drive straight to their closest police station should they believe they are being followed or call 10111.
• Do not pull straight into your driveway. Wait for the gate to open as hijackers may try block you in.
Rather stay in the road until your gate opens. Then drive in. This gives you the opportunity to get away.
“We urge our community members to be vigilant at all times,” said Const Daphney Phooko, communications officer for the Elsburg police.
“Furthermore, please report crimes or suspected criminal activity to the police. Every bit of information will assist us in solving crimes and help us keep our communities crime free.”
