Avbob hosts poetry competition

Each participant entered the competition for a variety of reasons. They crafted poems that comforted, provoked and challenged everyone present.

The Avbob Poetry Competition was held at the St George Hotel in Pretoria on July 25.

The ceremony was hosted by presenter Rozanne McKenzie, while the abundantly talented singer, Gloria Bosman uplifted the crowd with her music.

One of the competition winners, Kaizer Tjokoane, who recited a Sesotho poem titled E thobile thatohatsi, grew up in Ficksburg and is now based in Katlehong.

He has a higher certificate in public procurement and supply management from Unisa and is currently working as a control room operator in the private security industry.

He said that since he was little he loved the power and richness of words and has been inspired by those with a wide vocabulary.

“I started writing at the age of 15 and I never stopped. I drew inspiration from the hardships I experienced growing up, and that is what motivated me to enter the Avbob Poetry Competition. I wanted to positively embrace the opportunity to share my soul through writing,” he said.

Each of the 11 winners received R10 000 in cash prize and a R2 500 book voucher, sponsored by Avbob.
