No major injuries in cash-in-transit robbery

A cash-in-transit (CIT) truck was robbed of an undisclosed amount of money on September 16.

According to the Ekurhuleni District Communications Officer, Sgt Rufus Tema, a docket of CIT robbery has been opened and the police are investigating.

Tema said, “At 4.30pm on Monday, the police received information that a CIT truck overturned. The truck collided with a vehicle, which later caught fire. The vehicle matched a description of a BMW.

“Suspects fled the scene in a getaway car with an undisclosed amount of money and the CIT securities were also robbed of two firearms, a rifle and a pistol.”

According to Tema, no arrests have been made so far and no one was shot. The security officers only sustained injuries from the truck overturning.

Capt Lesetja Mathobela, the Katlehong North SAPS spokesperson, said, “According to my knowledge, in Katlehong North there have been two CIT robberies since the beginning of the year, but such cases are investigated by the provincial and national offices, so I don’t have much details on the cases.”

The SAPS national spokesperson, Lirandzu Themba, said the statistics can be found on www.saps.gov.za under the crime stats.
