Jacobus marks his 200th blood donation

Primrose resident celebrates as he makes his 200th blood donation.

The Germiston Blood Donor Centre had a festive atmosphere on Thursday as Primrose resident Jacobus Veldsman made his milestone 200th blood donation.

Jacobus and his wife Gerty have been married for almost 49 years and have lived in Primrose all that time.

Jacobus started donating blood in 1982 when his friend Sybrand Klopper (who is now deceased) asked him to come with him to the Hillbrow Centre to donate blood.

Jacobus Veldsman shows off the medal he received for his milestone 200th blood donation at the Germiston Blood Donor Centre on Thursday.

“When we got there I decided to donate and I have just carried on,” said Jacobus.

“I donate to save lives.”

Jacobus, who is now 72 years old, said that he donates blood every 65 days and he will continue to donate for as long as he can or for as long as his health allows.
