Police warn of bank card scam

Germiston SAPS warns of an increase in bank card theft and cloning at local ATMs.

Germiston police have noted with concern a rise in the number of bank card scams being reported.

“The modus operandi seems to be that ATM users will be approached by a stranger who will tell them that the ATM is not working properly,” explained Const Maxwell Mabunda, communications officer for the Germiston police.

“While the victim’s attention is drawn away from their card, the criminals will either steal or clone the bank card.

“Then before the victim even knows what has happened money is withdrawn from their account and the helpful stranger is gone.”

Police urge community members to keep such scams in mind and to never accept help from strangers while using an ATM.

“During the festive season, the Germiston SAPS will be visible throughout the precinct and ready to help the community in whatever way we can,” Mabunda said.
