Wanted criminal caught and sentenced to 28 years
The second-most-wanted criminal in Vosloorus, Wasket Machare (34) of Mozambique, was recently sentenced to 28 years in prison by the Vosloorus Regional Court.
Machare was arrested for theft out of a motor vehicle, a crime he committed in 2014.
Brian Selepe, the complainant from Nyoni Street, Mailula Park, told the police on July 23, 2014, that his car was broken into while parked in the yard, and that the battery was stolen.
According to Det Sgt Nhlanhla Tshabalala the case was opened on the same day of the commission of crime.
“Immediately after receiving the docket, I went to the scene of the crime. Selepe told me he did not know the suspect. I called all the role players, including fingerprint experts. I continued with my investigation until I managed to arrest the suspect, who is a 34-year-old Mozambican national.
“After arresting the suspect, I learnt that he was a wanted suspect around Vosloorus for other crimes, such as housebreaking and theft from motor vehicles.
“The suspect was linked to five other cases of housebreaking and theft from motor vehicle. He was charged on multiple counts when he appeared for the first time in court on August 14, 2017,” said Tshabalala.
He added the case was finalised in November 28, 2019, where he was found guilty on all six charges – one for theft from motor vehicle and five for housebreaking.
“He was sentenced to four years for theft from motor vehicle and eight years for each of the five cases of housebreaking. Charges five and six will run concurrently, which means the suspect will serve 28 years in prison,” said Tshabalala.
He said he was excited about the arrest because Machare was the second-most-wanted man in Vosloorus for terrorising the community.
The communication official at the Vosloorus SAPS, Capt Piet Rossouw, said it was good to know that people such as Machare had been removed from the community because they made the community’s life a “living hell”.
“We still want to urge the community to help the police to put these criminals where they belong,” said Rossouw.
