VLC plans to restore sump
“Due to the ongoing pollution, we have serious concerns regarding the water quality entering the lake,” said Carter.
The Victoria Lake Club is embarking on a project to get the filtration sump restored and is inviting those who might be interested in assisting to come forth.
According to member of the VLC and coordinator of the project Richard Carter, the club is doing this because the water is actively used.
“We have several initiatives and activities that firstly teach individuals to swim and then introduce them to the sports of either canoeing, rowing or sailing. The water is being used daily, so we need to keep the water clean,” said Carter.
He said the filtration sump has been a problem for a few years, and it has gotten worse.

“Due to the ongoing pollution, we have serious concerns regarding the water quality entering the lake,” said Carter.
The club has been making efforts to keep the lake as clean as possible.
“We cleaned the stormwater inlet with the help of our club members. But it’s not enough because the filtration sump has not prevented pollutants from entering the water,” said Carter.
He said restoring the sump will make a huge difference. The sump is located opposite the main entrance to the club, between Refinery Road and the railway line.
The club has already started cleaning up the area surrounding the sump.
“We need to get a clear picture of what needs to be done. Also, we had involved a few experts who had advised how to restore the sump,” said Carter.
He said a perimeter fence and gate needs to be replaced. Club members have been utilised to observe the area and make sure primary school children are kept out of the sump area.
The club plans to self-fund the project.
“We would like to invite companies and individuals who are willing to help to join us in this project,” said Carter.
