Over the previous months, a trolley was set up at the Tebbutt’s Academy and all members of the club were encouraged to donate groceries, toiletries and snacks to fill up the trolley.
Members pitched in and within a short time, the trolley was filled to the brim and ready to be distributed.
“Once we had a full trolley of groceries I started to look for a place that we could support.
“I came across Die Anker Tehuis in Germiston and I was given a tour by Martie Otten.
“I thought that there could never have been a more deserving place for our club to support,” said Kancho Alex Tebbutt.
Otten said she had been at Die Anker for 31 years and she has been privileged to have spent time with amazing people in their golden years.
“Die Anker started in 1948 as a hostel for girls who came from rural areas seeking jobs and working in the surrounding industries.
“In 1972 it was converted to a home for the elderly and the rest is history,” said Martie.

“Unfortunately, we don’t have any nurses on staff or facilities that allow us to take care of residents who require frail care so our home takes care of elderly people who are self-sufficient.
“We currently have 45 residents and the oldest is 87 years old.
“The elderly are wonderful people and talking to them and spending time with them is like spending time in a library full of fascinating tales and pearls of wisdom,” she said.
“I urge the public to spend a day with us and our residents. The past few years have been hard on us.
“The funds that we receive barely cover our expenses but we are grateful that we are still going.
“We would like to give thanks to Kancho Alex and all members of Tebbutts Academy for their generous donations,” said Otten.
