Primrose police arrest four illegal miners

Four illegal miners were arrested in Primrose’s surrounding informal settlements.

The Primrose SAPS arrested four suspected illegal miners on February 22 at Makause, Delpot and Marathon informal settlements.

The SAPS, in conjunction with security companies, the EMPD, AfriForum and home affairs, conducted an operation in the informal settlements.

They also seized mining equipment.

The Primrose SAPS communications officer, Sergeant Styles Maome, shows some of the equipment seized by law enforcement.

The stakeholders initiated the operation in response to several tip-offs from the community about illegal mining.

The Primrose SAPS communications officer, Sergeant Styles Maome said the community played a vital role in informing law enforcement agencies about households suspected of being involved in illegal mining activities.

“The police acted on the tip-offs and made successful arrests.

Over the past months, the station has dealt with murder cases suspected to have been related to illegal mining,” said Maome.

Warrant Officer Adam Dikhoba said the confiscated mining equipment included phendukas, generators, motors and gas cylinders.

“Through these operations, we hope to bring criminal activities relating to illegal mining in the area to a stop.

“We encourage the community to keep reporting suspected criminal activities,” said Dikhoba.
