Held bimonthly at Edenvale’s skatepark, the recent contest took place on March 4.
Skaters showcased their skills when they competed for various prizes in several categories sponsored by Dragon Energy and Hi-Tech.

011’s Dean Backos said it was nice to see the community come out to show support for the skaters.
“We have skaters coming from the whole of Johannesburg, which is exciting and we have a few sponsored skaters from Redbull and Dragon Energy.
“This is our first competition since building the funbox and it is one of the best in Gauteng,” said Backos.
He said the event is important as it shows sponsors that they can host such a great competition, especially with Ultimate X going on.

They recently became affiliated with the national governing body for skaters, Roller Sport South Africa.

Backos said in the future they would like for their competitions to count towards the national championships and to continue improving the facility’s exterior.
Local skater Kelvin Vosloo said the biggest win for him is winning the hearts of the supporters and that through skateboarding he has found a second family.
Shadey Films’ Cade Mein said the goal is to bring people together so they could have fun.

“At the end of the day, we try to raise money and give it back to the skatepark and also the people that are utilising the facility. We aim to grow extreme sports in South Africa.

“I have always loved and have been involved with extreme sports and there’s a lot of talent in South Africa that’s untouched. It’s the easiest and cheapest sport for people that love extreme sports,” said Mein.
Backos, who thanked the sponsors, said they also host skating lessons on Saturdays.
