The Hoërskool Vryburger High School hockey team has experienced significant growth in 2025, nearly doubling the number of players.
For the first time, the school has two junior teams comprising 36 girls, including those who made the senior team.
According to coach Danel Cilliers, the team is like a big family that has grown over the past two years.
“The popularity of the sport in the school is growing. The girls love it and enjoy playing as well,” said Cilliers.

“The school has an open policy, welcoming all interested girls and teaching them the basics. Experienced players help new ones adjust, and the team focuses on discipline, fostering a strong bond among players,” said Cilliers.
The team practices after school from 14:15 on Mondays to Thursdays. Despite early rains disrupting practice sessions earlier in the year, the team remained consistent.
While other schools are dropping out of the league due to player shortages, Vryburger benefits from having a large pool of players.
“School hockey is growing around the region and gaining popularity. We had two schools dropping out of the league due to a shortage of players. On the other hand, we have the numbers but not the resources,” said Cilliers.
The team has competed in league and friendly games, including a 3-0 win against Springs Tech.
The coaching team has expanded to four coaches, with two new coaches learning alongside the new players.

“The school is grateful for the support, recently receiving a donation of hockey sticks.
“To ensure our success, we have continued to ask for support as a school, recently gaining a donation of hockey sticks, which have helped our school so much. To further donate to our team or school sports, contact the school at 011 828 9047,” said Cilliers.
