One dead in Wychwood factory fire
The fire also destroyed a Mahindra bakkie and four generators on the property.
A devastating factory fire broke out on April 19, at approximately 14:43, on Main Reef Road in Wychwood, claiming the life of one individual.
The City of Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) team from Station 10 responded swiftly to the scene.
Upon arrival, firefighters were met with intense flames engulfing one 12-metre container and one six-metre container.

The blaze rapidly intensified as approximately 70 210-litre drums and 27 1000-litre drums caught alight, with several exploding due to extreme heat.
DEMS media liaison officer Eric Maloka reported that the containers contained hydraulic oil, a substance known to be highly flammable under high-temperature conditions.
“A district-wide emergency response was activated, bringing in additional firefighting units from Primrose and Edenvale fire stations. Private emergency responders also assisted in combating the blaze,” said Maloka.
He told GCN that the firefighters managed to contain the fire and continued with cooling operations to prevent reignition.
“During search and rescue efforts, one body was discovered burned beyond recognition. Netcare 911 paramedics declared the individual dead at the scene,” said Maloka.

“The cause of the fire remains unknown at this stage. Fire safety officials have launched an investigation, while the SAPS was called to the scene due to the fatality,” said Moloka.
