Primrose double murder case against Nkosinathi Mabasa moves to April 14

Mabasa stands accused of murdering two men, whose charred bodies were discovered in a burnt-out vehicle near Wannenburg Clinic on October 2.

Nkosinathi Mabasa appeared in the Germiston Regional Court on March 7, facing charges of double murder linked to an incident in Primrose last October.

During his hearing on Friday morning, the court postponed the case again and remanded to custody.

Their family members later identified them.

According to regional court State prosecutor Ntolikazi Mbobo, the accused sustained burn injuries while allegedly setting the vehicle and victims on fire.

“Mabasa was detained at Bertha Gxowa Hospital for medical treatment on the same day of the incident,” said Mbobo.

He suffered burn wounds from his left thigh to his knee.

His records indicated he was a resident of the Makause informal settlement and was allegedly involved in illegal mining.

Although the State has not confirmed a motive, authorities suspect the murders could be linked to illegal mining activities.

The magistrate postponed the case to April 14, pending further investigations. The State is awaiting video recordings sent to forensics for analysis.

Mbobo stated the victims’ bodies were burned beyond recognition.

That was Mabasa’s fifth court appearance, following two sessions at the Germiston Magistrate’s Court before they transferred the case to the regional court.

Awaiting his fourth regional court appearance, the State believes the matter will remain in the regional court.

“This court handles murder cases almost daily,” said Mbobo, adding the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) will determine whether the case will be finalised in the regional court or escalated to the high court.
