SAPS, with the SANDF, CPF and other stakeholders, conducted a destruction operation in Crystal Park to prevent confiscated illegal mining equipment from re-entering circulation.

SAPS members, working with the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), Community Policing Forum (CPF) and other stakeholders, conducted a destruction operation to curb illegal mining activities in the Ekurhuleni District.

The operation took place on Monday, May 4, at Allen Scrap Yard in Crystal Park, where confiscated illegal mining equipment was destroyed to prevent it from re-entering circulation.

According to police, the equipment had been seized during previous operations targeting illegal mining across the district.

Items destroyed included phendukas, electric motors, stampers, steel balls, gas gauges, cutting torches, shovels and steel pots. The equipment was ground down and cut into pieces on site.

The destruction forms part of ongoing efforts by law enforcement to disrupt illegal mining networks and reduce related criminal activity in the region.

The operation was led by Ekurhuleni District Vispol Commander Colonel Alistair Subramanian, who emphasised the importance of continued community cooperation in tackling the problem.

He urged members of the public to report information that could assist police in identifying and arresting suspects involved in illegal mining.
