Operation Shanela nets 190 suspects across Ekurhuleni

The SAPS in the Ekurhuleni District recently arrested 190 suspects for various crimes during Operation Shanela.

According to a statement issued by the office of the district commissioner, Major General Anna Sithole, the arrests were carried out across several policing precincts in Ekurhuleni.

Three illegal liquor outlets were also shut down during the operation.

Ekurhuleni district communications officer Captain Neldah Sekgobela said detectives arrested 139 suspects during tracing operations.

“Among those arrested, 76 were linked to contact crimes, two to property-related crimes, 46 to other serious offences, and 13 to gender-based violence-related matters.”

In Primrose, SAPS members followed up on information regarding a landlord allegedly involved in a domestic violence dispute with tenants a week earlier.

“On arrival, the suspect was found in possession of a firearm. When asked to produce its licence, he failed to do so,” said Sekgobela.

“The suspect was subsequently arrested and detained at Primrose SAPS. Other suspects arrested during the weekend are facing charges ranging from possession of drugs, possession of unlicensed firearms, drunk driving, dealing in liquor without a licence, and contravention of immigration laws,” said Sekgobela.

Sithole applauded law enforcement agencies and stakeholders for their efforts in ensuring the safety of residents across the district.
