Rocks, burning tyres, and other objects have been used to barricade the road, causing major traffic disruptions.

Protesters were earlier occupying the middle of the roadway, while members of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD), together with the South African Police Service (SAPS) Public Order Policing Unit, monitored the situation on scene.

The R550 road next to Tsietsie Section in Katlehong remains heavily obstructed after protesters barricaded the route with rocks, burning tyres, and debris.

“The road remains heavily obstructed, with protesters also having dug a hole in the middle of the road, further impacting traffic flow,” said EMPD media liaison officer Katlego Mphahlele.

“At present, there are no protest participants on scene. EMPD and SAPS Public Order Policing (POPs) officers are actively clearing the barricades and continuing to monitor the area,” she said.

Motorists are strongly advised to avoid the area and make use of alternative routes until further notice.
