John Senona elected Ekurhuleni council Speaker after securing 94 votes

ATM councillor defeats EFF’s Nkululeko Dunga following Dora Mlambo’s move to the mayoral committee.

John Senona of the African Transformation Movement (ATM) has been elected the new Speaker of the City of Ekurhuleni council.

Senona secured 94 votes in the council election, defeating Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) candidate Nkululeko Dunga, who received 33 votes.

The position became vacant after former Speaker Dora Mlambo resigned to take up a new role as Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Infrastructure and Development in the metro.

Senona’s election takes place amid ongoing coalition dynamics and political realignments within the Ekurhuleni council.

Councillors have expressed optimism that the new Speaker will help strengthen oversight and provide stability during a period of political shifts and continued service delivery challenges.

As Speaker, Senona will preside over council meetings, ensure adherence to municipal rules and procedures, and play a key role in guiding discussions and decision-making in the metro council.
