WATCH: Germiston residents protest outside council over ongoing electricity crisis

Residents from Leondale, Roodekop Ext 31 and Buhle Park gathered outside the Germiston council chamber during an extraordinary council meeting, demanding urgent intervention over persistent power outages affecting their communities.

Frustrated residents from Wards 40, 41, 94 and 95 demonstrated outside council offices while councillors met inside for a special sitting, saying they have endured years of unreliable electricity supply with little improvement.

Community members said they were at the council chambers to submit a detailed memorandum outlining their concerns over the worsening electricity crisis.

According to residents, the affected areas are plagued by frequent, prolonged and often unannounced power outages despite repeated complaints and engagements with municipal officials over the years.

Residents claim the outages regularly occur at predictable times, including late at night, over weekends and around month-end periods, sparking concerns about ageing infrastructure, system failures and poor management of the electricity network.

Protesters said the ongoing outages have severely affected daily life, businesses and safety in their communities, and they are calling on the municipality to provide a consistent and reliable power supply.
