Nando’s launches new franchise in Katlehong

“It is nice to bring it (Nando’s restaurant) to the community and create jobs and awareness.”

Kathorus residents can now save on fuel or taxi fare and travelling time as Nando’s brings its services and its famous flame-grilled pero-peri chicken closer to home.

Nando’s officially launched its first Casa Quadrado in South Africa on May 8, at Sam Ntuli Mall, Katlehong.

As a container restaurant with a drive-thru, it is wheelchair-friendly, Halaal certified and offers a full menu. It is the only Nando’s within a 10km radius.

Entrepreneur and Nando’s franchisee Louis Achadinha said they own a couple of restaurants, however, they are new to the Nando’s brand.

“We have been with Nando’s for about two to three years. We have branches in Tsakane and Eldorado Park, and we are looking at opening another branch in Soweto,” said Argentina.

He said they have also considered the Chris Hani Mall.

“There is a need for Nando’s in the area because the closest Nando’s is in Brackenhurst. It is good to bring it to the community and create jobs and awareness.”

Achadinha said they sourced the workforce from within the community. He explained they have already interviewed approximately 600 people and selected a few, but this number will grow as the turnover grows.

“We are off to a good start and would appreciate support from the community so we can be here for a long time selling them Nando’s amazing chicken.”

The Nando’s Katlehong restaurant also created opportunities for young designers – the patterns painted on the Casa Quadrado container were designed by Glorinah Khutso Mabaso from Mamelodi, Pretoria.

Erika Smit, Nando’s general manager of regional marketing, said the objective is to bring Nando’s chicken closer to everyone in South Africa while making a positive impact on people’s lives.“

“It thrilled us to open our first Casa Quadrado container restaurant in Katlehong. We are committed to investing in the area by creating spaces where the community can get together over a good meal, catch up on some work with free Wi-Fi and even benefit from the jobs that have been created by this new store opening.

Some of the customers who joined Nando’s Katlehong for its official launch won Nando’s branded cooler bag.

“This is the first of two Casa Quadrados that are planned to be built as part of a trial for this new format, as we look to expand across the country,” said Smit.
