Parties sceptical of some new mayor’s Mayoral Committee

This move comes despite previous reservations expressed by the council regarding the EFF’s leadership.

The unveiling of Ekurhuleni Mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza’s mayoral committee on April 15 stirred renewed concerns about Ekurhuleni’s leadership.

Xhakaza, who assumed office uncontested and was sworn in on April 11 in Germiston, revealed his team of 10 MMCs, drawing attention to the inclusion of five members from the EFF.

This move comes despite previous reservations expressed by the council regarding the EFF’s leadership.

Backing Xhakaza’s decision, the Ekurhuleni Super Seven, a coalition of political parties, emphasised the need for stability and expressed confidence in Xhakaza’s ability to serve the city and residents’ interests.

Lesiba Mojapelo, the head of the Super Seven, stressed the importance of allowing the majority to lead to ensure stability in the council.

However, scepticism remains among some parties, with ActionSA voicing reservations about the return of the EFF’s Nkululeko Dunga as the MMC for Finance.

Mojapelo cited previous financial crises as cause for concern, warning that such concessions could compromise service delivery for residents.

The Mayoral Committee (MMC) also includes:

MMC for Water and Sanitation – Thembi Msane.

MMC for Environmental Resources and Waste Management – Leshaka Manamela.

MMC for Community Services – Bridget Thusi.

MMC for Community Safety – Sizakele Masuku.

MMC for Developmental Planning and Real Estate – Nomadlozi Nkosi.

MMC for Roads and Transport Planning – Andile Mngwevu.

MMC for Energy – Mzayifani Ngwenya.

MMC for Human Settlements – Kgopelo Hollo.

MMC for Corporate and Shared Services – Sivuyile Ngodwana.
