Reckless driving results in higher sentence for refuse truck driver
Following a review of the original sentence, diligent investigative and prosecutorial efforts led to an increased three-year prison term for the driver.
Norkem Park SAPS has welcomed the successful sentencing improvement secured by Sergeant Maborala in a culpable homicide case.
The case involved an Ekurhuleni refuse truck driver whose negligent driving along Soutpansberg Street resulted in the tragic deaths of two refuse collectors who were on the truck at the time.
Following a review of the original sentence, diligent investigative and prosecutorial efforts led to an increased three-year prison term for the driver.

“This reinforces the serious consequences of reckless and negligent driving,” said Norkem Park SAPS spokesperson, Warrant Officer Barbara-Anne Ferreira-Dookie.
She added that case highlighted the impact of irresponsible driving.
“Negligence behind the wheel not only endangers the driver but also places innocent lives at risk.
“Whether caused by speeding, distracted driving, or failure to follow traffic laws, reckless behavior can have tragic and irreversible consequences,” she said.
Norkem Park SAPS has urged all motorists, including public service vehicle operators, to drive with extreme caution.
“Every driver has a responsibility to uphold road safety by adhering to speed limits, staying alert, and respecting the rights of pedestrians and other road users.”
