First-ever skills insurance workshop held in Gauteng
Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi reiterated the government’s commitment to working with INSETA to equip young people with the skills needed to contribute to the economy.
The Insurance Sector Education and Training Authority (INSETA) hosted its first-ever Insurance Skills Indaba at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand on March 19 and 20.
The event, held under the theme: A Responsive Disruption Through Skills Innovation, gathered industry leaders, policymakers, government officials, and professionals to discuss ways of improving skills development in the insurance sector.
INSETA’s CEO Gugu Mkhize emphasised the organisation’s focus on collaboration in her keynote address.
“We pride ourselves on collaborating with multiple stakeholders to facilitate skills development and, crucially, to ensure that the people being trained are ready for the world of work.”
She also highlighted the significant involvement of 40 exhibitors who contributed to the discussions on upskilling South Africa’s youth.
The two-day event featured a wide range of speakers, workshops, and interactive sessions. The topics covered included the role of digital innovation in bridging socioeconomic gaps, the impact of AI and drone technology on the sector, regulatory compliance, and sustainability in insurance.

“Last year, we registered 650 000 unemployed youth who needed to be re-skilled. We are proud to work with our partners to ensure these young people can become relevant to the economy.”
One of the key highlights of the indaba was a panel discussion led by Queen Ndlovu, CEO of QP Drone Tech, a company training young South Africans in drone operation and AI technology for disaster management.
Ndlovu addressed initial concerns around these technologies but stressed their importance in preparing youth for future job markets.
The indaba also featured the INSETA Excellence Recognition Awards, which honoured individuals and organisations that have made significant contributions to skills development within the sector.
Additionally, the Insure-Careers Exhibition attracted 2 000 learners, connecting them with career opportunities and live employment services.
Through this event, INSETA reinforced its crucial role in driving skills innovation and transforming the insurance sector.
The indaba served as an important platform for fostering collaboration and addressing the skills needs of South Africa’s workforce.
