DEMS issues warning amid wet weather

Avoid travelling, if possible. Stay indoors during heavy downpours.

The City of Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services rescue teams remain on high alert following a Yellow Level Two warning for disruptive rain expected within the region.

Pedestrians, motorists and residents in general are alerted to be extremely cautious, especially those in low-lying areas, near the water streams and flood lines, and everyone crossing low-lying bridges.

Safety tips to keep in mind:

• Refrain from crossing flooded bridges. Use alternative routes instead.
• Avoid crossing swollen water streams and rivers; the complacency of knowing the area and roads might be deceiving.
• In case of flooding, move to higher grounds.
• Motorists should keep a safe following distance.
• Avoid high-speed driving.
• Avoid travelling, if possible. Stay indoors during heavy downpours.
• Be cautious of fallen trees, debris, damaged powerlines and all other road hazards.
• Potholes are usually not visible because of rainwater on the road.
