Killed audit head of Ekurhuleni remembered

Born on August 30, 1981, in Thembisa, Mpho was the cherished firstborn and only child of his parents, Keikilame Azarial Mafole and Shela Norah Mafole.

Mpho Kabasia Mafole, who served as the City of Ekurhuleni’s divisional head of corporate and forensic audit, was shot and killed in Kempton Park on June 30.

Born on August 30, 1981, in Thembisa, Mpho was the cherished firstborn and only child of his parents, Keikilame Azarial Mafole and Shela Norah Mafole.

His educational journey began at Kgatlamping Primary School, followed by Seotloane Primary and Bramley Primary, before completing his matric at Edenvale High School.

He pursued higher education at Pretoria Technikon, where he earned a B-Tech degree in internal auditing. He later specialised in fraud risk management at the University of Pretoria.

Mpho’s distinguished career began at Ernst & Young and continued with the Auditor-General South Africa (AGSA) in 2010, where he was honoured with a Certificate of Leadership Excellence.

He went on to earn certifications as a fraud examiner and forensic practitioner and was recognised by the Southern African Institute of Government Auditors (SAIGA).

After his tenure at AGSA, he continued to excel in his career. On April 1, 2025, he was appointed divisional head of corporate and forensic audit at the City of Ekurhuleni, a position he held until his untimely passing.

Mpho lost his life in a fatal shooting on the R23 near the M57 (Pretoria Road) in Esselen Park, Kempton Park, on June 30. He was laid to rest at Mooifontein Cemetery.

He is survived by his parents, his fiancée Kele Masapo, his three children, and a grieving circle of extended family and friends.

Those who knew Mafole remember him as a dedicated, fun-loving, caring and supportive individual who approached life with positivity and a commitment to making a difference.
