Breaking barriers in Ekurhuleni: Amanda Cockerell’s journey
From challenges to leadership, Copalcor’s Amanda Cockerell is proving women can thrive in technical fields.
Amanda Cockerell from Copalcor is passionate about protecting people and the working environment.
From an early age, she was fascinated by the complexity of industry and its impact on everyday life.
Though female role models were scarce at the time, the strength of the women in her family inspired her.

“When I entered this field, there were very few women to look up to, but the strength of the women in my family and the mentors I found along the way helped shape my journey. I was inspired by women who quietly broke barriers, often without recognition, and their resilience encouraged me to step into spaces where we are underrepresented,” shared Amanda.
Like any journey, she came across obstacles. One of the biggest challenges she faced was being heard.
“Early in my career, I had to work twice as hard to prove that my knowledge and perspective were valuable. But through preparation, consistency, and delivering results, I earned the respect that often comes slowly to women in such environments,” said Amanda.
She also experienced moments of being underestimated, whether it was being mistaken for someone in an administrative role or having her authority questioned on technical matters.
Instead of being discouraged, she let her work speak louder than any assumption, using those instances to shift perceptions and challenge biases.

She shares that in an environment where women are often expected to “toughen up,” she has chosen to remain soft.
“I’ve learned that strength and softness can co-exist. I don’t try to imitate anyone else’s style. I stay true to who I am – empathetic, firm, and detail-oriented,” she shares. Reflecting on her journey, she acknowledges that the industry has made progress toward inclusivity.
More women are stepping into leadership positions, and conversations about equity are taking centre stage. However, technical and operational departments still have ground to cover to achieve true balance. Her message to young girls who aspire to join the industry is not be afraid.
“Don’t let fear hold you back. The industry needs your voice, your ideas, and your perspective. Equip yourself with knowledge, find mentors, and never underestimate your value. Your uniqueness is your power,” shares Amanda.
She said her journey has given her lessons on leadership. “There were times I felt pressure to adopt traits considered ‘masculine’ to gain authority, but I discovered that leadership is about balance, being approachable yet firm, decisive yet collaborative,” said Amanda. True authority, she believes, comes from authenticity, not mimicry.
She said she is motivated by the knowledge that every barrier she breaks creates opportunities for other women. She actively mentors younger colleagues and advocates for policies that support inclusivity.
“I’m passionate about creating safer workplaces and showing that women can thrive in these spaces. Each step forward isn’t just for me, it’s for the next generation of women who will walk through these doors.”
