Six people died after a Mazda sedan overturned and ended up submerged in the Zonkizizwe River on the R550 on August 31, City of Ekurhuleni DEMS confirms.

The City of Ekurhuleni DEMS has confirmed that six people died in a motor vehicle accident on the R550 in Zonkizizwe on August 31.

DEMS received a distress call at approximately 20:26 reporting that a Mazda sedan had gone into the river.

Emergency teams arrived to find the vehicle lying on its roof, fully submerged underwater.

Six people lost their lives when a car plunged into the Zonkizizwe River on the R550, with emergency services on the scene.

Firefighters and rescue crews successfully towed the vehicle from the river. All six occupants were declared dead at the scene by Gauteng Emergency Management Services.

Firefighters and rescue teams recovered six bodies after a Mazda sedan overturned and submerged in the Zonkizizwe River.

The cause of the accident is unknown, and the scene has been handed over to law enforcement authorities for further investigation.
