Local woman champions gender equality in male-dominated fields

Rather than settle into conventional careers often directed at women, she pursued a field where strength, intellect, and technical expertise are daily requirements.

Didi Mosala, an operations coordinator, is shifting perceptions, challenging norms, and inspiring the next generation of women to take their rightful place in industrial spaces.

“Women who stepped into environments that challenged the idea that ‘women belong in the kitchen’ always fascinated me.

“Even as a child, I knew I could do hard things, and I refused to accept that my path had to be limited to what was expected of me,” shared Didi.

Rather than settle into conventional careers often directed at women, she pursued a field where strength, intellect, and technical expertise are daily requirements.

She found inspiration in women who broke boundaries in engineering and manufacturing – women she saw in the media, online, and even within her own academic circles. They showed her that gender should never determine potential.

She said that entering a male-dominated industry wasn’t without its hurdles. One of the biggest was being taken seriously, especially by older male colleagues.

“There was a noticeable difference in how quickly workers responded to male counterparts compared to me. It was hard at first, but I learned to be firm, direct, and clear in my communication. Respect isn’t just earned through words; it’s earned through consistency, competence, and confidence,” said Didi.

Another challenge is the physical demands of the job. While she jokes that some labour is for men, she’s clear that leadership isn’t about how much you can lift; it’s about how effectively you can manage, guide, and inspire others.

“One challenge I face is the constraints on carrying out some of the day-to-day tasks. Some labour is truly just for men, and I wish I could do more than just tell operators and/or workers what to do,” said Didi.

“Hence, I did not need to toughen up. I remain deeply rooted in my authenticity.

“I don’t need to compromise my femininity to gain respect. I lead with confidence, I’m firm in my approach, and I don’t tolerate disrespect,” said Didi.

Her leadership style blends empathy with assertiveness.

“I’ve learned to be direct without being disrespectful. Women often soften their tone to avoid making others uncomfortable, but I’ve found that you can be clear and kind,” she said.

While she hasn’t been in the industry long enough to witness massive shifts, she has seen promising changes especially at Copalcor.

“Women are taking up space, being heard, and leading in ways that once seemed impossible. They’re not just in the room; they’re contributing, innovating, and driving change,” she shared.

She said that through her experience on her journey, and seeing the opportunities available, she urges young girls to consider careers in manufacturing, engineering, or similar fields.

“There will always be people who don’t understand your dreams, but that’s not your problem. If it’s in your heart, it’s there for a reason. Take the leap. Be bold. You belong in every space you’re willing to work for,” said Didi.

She believes that today’s young women are more fearless, and she knows they’ll make an even greater impact.

“I took a leap of faith and it’s the best decision I’ve ever made for my career,” shares Didi.
