WATCH: MECSU strike in Germiston CBD enters fifth day, causing traffic delays
Union members picket municipal offices as city urges adherence to the law.
The Municipal Employees and Civil Servants Union (MECSU)-led strike in Germiston’s central business district has entered its fifth day, with members picketing on President Street and slowing traffic in the area. The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) is on site, directing traffic where possible.
The City of Ekurhuleni has called on the union and its members to comply with the law, following an incident on Friday when protesters blocked entrances and exits to municipal offices. Despite this, MECSU has maintained its stance.

“Our strike is protected and lawful,” said MECSU Secretary Vukile Mlungwana. “Claims that it is interdicted are false. The City’s urgent application to interdict the strike was dismissed with costs.”
Mlungwana stressed the union’s resolve, adding, “We will not retreat until our legitimate demands for better working conditions are met.”
