Ekurhuleni shines at OR Tambo Soncini Social Cohesion Games with multiple medals

The games celebrate OR Tambo’s legacy while promoting teamwork, unity, and sporting excellence across Gauteng communities.

The City of Ekurhuleni won first prize at the OR Tambo Soncini Social Cohesion Games hosted by the Gauteng Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture.

The games were held at Ellis Park Arena for two days.

Participants were young athletes from the CoE, City of Johannesburg, City of Tshwane, West Rand District Municipality and Sedibeng District Municipality, competing across five sporting codes, namely basketball, netball, volleyball, rugby, and chess.

The OR Tambo-Soncini Social Cohesion Games are held to commemorate the life and legacy of OR Tambo, and in remembrance of the friendship with his exile host in Italy, Giuseppe Soncini.

The games foster unity and social cohesion in communities through spirited competition and teamwork.

Team Ekurhuleni won several medals during the recent OR Tambo Soncini Social Cohesion Games.

The Ekurhuleni teams demonstrated exceptional talent and dedication across various sporting codes, achieving outstanding results. In chess, the boys’ team secured a gold medal, while the girls’ team proudly earned silver.

The rugby boys continued the winning spirit with a gold medal, and the girls achieved a commendable fifth place.
In volleyball, the boys claimed bronze and the girls finished in fifth place.

Both the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams performed strongly, each taking home silver medals.

In netball, both teams displayed impressive skill and determination, earning silver medals as well.

“The City of Ekurhuleni extends its heartfelt gratitude to all participants, coaches, and organisers whose commitment and hard work made these remarkable achievements possible,” said city spokesperson Zweli Dlamini.
