Public urged to donate old spectacles in support of vision-care initiative
Donation boxes placed nationwide will help collect glasses that can be refurbished and distributed to communities with limited access to eye-care resources.
In 1974, the Lions Club of South Africa launched a collaborative multi-club initiative called Lions BrightSight, aimed at refurbishing donated spectacles and distributing them to those in need.
The project proved successful across the then-Transvaal, and in 1991, SA Lions leadership established it as a national project to assist clubs and organisations with vision-related initiatives in their communities.
More than 50 years later, Lions BrightSight continues to provide low-cost corrective spectacles to those who need them.

This December, AutoZone has committed to supporting the cause by placing spectacle collection boxes at all its 170 branches nationwide.
Customers are encouraged to bring old or unused spectacles to any branch, helping thousands of people see clearly and live brighter lives.
“We are thrilled to be partnering with the Lions Club on such a meaningful project,” said Krystle Stewien, AutoZone marketing manager.
“Good vision can change everything. It impacts education, employment, and everyday quality of life. By simply donating an old pair of glasses, our customers can help someone regain their independence and confidence.”
To thank donors, everyone who contributes a pair of spectacles will receive a Knights of the Blind pin from Lions BrightSight as a token of appreciation.
“We are grateful to the incredible team at AutoZone for their generosity and genuine interest in our work,” said Lions BrightSight chairman Cliff Hocking.
