Illegal mining and waste reclaimer clash leads to temporary shutdown as police secure the area and waste services are redirected

The City of Ekurhuleni has temporarily closed the Simmer and Jack landfill site following a shooting incident linked to a clash between illegal miners and waste reclaimers.

Officers from the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) and the South African Police Service (SAPS) are currently on site to restore safety for staff and users of the facility.

Waste collection trucks have been redirected to alternative landfill sites, including Rooikraal in Dawn Park, Platkop in Katlehong, Weltevreden in Brakpan and Rietfontein in KwaThema.

The municipality confirmed that the landfill site will remain closed until safety has been restored and operations can resume without risk.

The City of Ekurhuleni has apologised for the inconvenience caused to residents and service providers.
