EMPD on high alert ahead of planned Ekurhuleni protest

EMPD remains on high alert ahead of the anticipated June 30 protest against illegal immigration.

The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) has confirmed that it is fully prepared for a planned protest regarding undocumented foreign nationals, scheduled to take place across the City of Ekurhuleni on June 30.

In a statement issued on June 27, the department said it has increased operational readiness across all three regions of the city to ensure public safety and maintain law and order throughout the demonstrations.

EMPD warned that while the constitutional right to protest will be respected, such gatherings can sometimes be exploited by criminal elements engaging in activities such as looting and public disorder.

EMPD officers will be deployed across Ekurhuleni to maintain law and order during the planned protest on June 30.

The department stressed that law enforcement officers will act decisively against anyone who infringes on the rights of others or engages in criminal conduct.

Several hotspots have been identified across the city, with officers deployed to coordinate operations, secure National Key Points and monitor major freeways. EMPD officers will also be responsible for monitoring incidents and providing operational updates throughout the day.

Motorists have been advised to expect temporary traffic disruptions in affected areas. The department said updates on road closures and alternative routes will be communicated where necessary.

EMPD further reminded residents that immigration enforcement remains the responsibility of authorised national authorities and warned members of the public against taking the law into their own hands.

“Any such actions constitute a criminal offence, and perpetrators will face the full might of the law,” said EMPD spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Kelebogile Thepa.

The department also warned that vandalism of essential municipal infrastructure, intimidation, and any conduct aimed at disrupting public order will not be tolerated.

Authorities have urged residents to remain calm and report any criminal activity as law enforcement prepares for the planned demonstrations across Ekurhuleni.

Residents are encouraged to report criminal activity to the Bedfordview Call Centre on 011 999 1920, the Northern Joint Operations Centre on 011 999 9504, or the Southern Joint Operations Centre on 011 999 5988.

Further coordination will be undertaken through EMPD Operations and Specialised Services to ensure an effective response during the planned protest.
