WATCH: Tensions rise as protesters gather outside Germiston CBD building suspected of housing undocumented foreign nationals

Protesters gathered outside a building in Germiston CBD believed to house undocumented foreign nationals before moving towards Primrose, where law enforcement continued to monitor the march.

Members of the community gathered outside a building on President Street in Germiston CBD where it is alleged that undocumented foreign nationals reside.

It was also alleged that drugs were sold from the property and that other illegal activities take place there.

After entering the building, organiser later informed the crows that the Germiston CBD building had no foreign nationals inside.

Police and march leaders returned from inside the building on President Street in Germiston CBD to find sporadic incidents of violence outside.

One person was reportedly being assaulted by individuals who had earlier refused police entry to the building following verbal disagreements while awaiting the outcome of the search inside.

The crowd was informed that South African families with valid documentation were found inside the building and they called for the march to disperse, ending the day’s activity.

March leaders addressed the crowd after entering the Germiston CBD building, reporting no foreign nationals inside. They confirmed South African families with valid documentation were found and called for the march to disperse, ending the day’s activity.

According to the Gauteng Provincial JOC, a Gauteng Police Board initiative, protesters later moved to Primrose.

“Protesters moved east along Rietfontein Road in the Primrose area of Germiston towards Poplar Road. Law enforcement and security monitored the march.”

The group later moved along Pretoria Road towards Shamrock Road and proceeded down Rietfontein Road before turning onto Cactus Road and then right onto Pretoria Road.

They are being monitored by a strong law enforcement presence, including SAPS and private security.

Motorists are advised to avoid these areas.
