Nearly 800 wanted suspects arrested during Operation Shanela in Johannesburg

A multidisciplinary operation in the Johannesburg and Hillbrow policing precincts led to the arrest of 788 wanted suspects, including 169 sought for crimes against women and children.

The recent Operation Shanela, led by Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni, also saw police arrest five suspects on charges of possession of and dealing in drugs during a roadblock.

In addition, officers apprehended 200 undocumented immigrants for processing in terms of immigration legislation.

Police officers conduct stop-and-search operations during a high-density Operation Shanela aimed at tackling crime in Johannesburg and Hillbrow.

Traffic officials issued 145 fines totalling R99 250 during the operation.

The operation included roadblocks, high-visibility patrols and stop-and-search operations as part of ongoing efforts to combat crime and improve public safety.
