EMPD officers honoured for bravery and outstanding service
The ceremony also celebrated extraordinary career longevity, presenting Colonel M.N. Bloemhof with the 40-Year Loyal service medal for four decades of unwavering commitment to municipal policing.
EMPD Commissioner Issac Mapiyeye honoured seven EMPD officers for their bravery and outstanding service, during a prestigious medal ceremony held in Bedfordview on October 1.
The officers were also recognised for their contribution to counter-terrorism operations, traffic law enforcement and long-standing service to the department.
Hosted as part of the National Chiefs Forum, the awards were presented by Mapiyeye in recognition of outstanding professionalism and bravery across the City of Ekurhuleni.

Among those honoured were three officers from the Germiston South Precinct, who were awarded the Silver Cross for Bravery for executing a perilous rescue following a major vehicle crash at the Refinery Road and M2 on-ramp intersection.
“The department’s specialised services division also featured prominently, with two officers receiving the Silver Decoration for Outstanding Service after arresting two fugitives wanted on Interpol Red Notices for terrorism-related offenses in the United States,” said EMPD spokesperson Chief Superintendent Kelebogile Thepa.

“One of the officers earned an additional Commendation Medal for assisting the SAPS Head Office Counter Extremism Unit in apprehending three further terrorism suspects. Traffic enforcement successes were highlighted through a Commendation Medal awarded to an officer from the Overloads Unit.”

“Operating under the Freeway Pedestrian Project between January 2025 and August 2026, the officer spearheaded freeway operations that resulted in 138 arrests, 206 impounded vehicles, and 64 vehicle discontinuation notices,” said Thepa.
