Germiston SAPS clerk shines at district excellence awards
Sanie Kgomo received top honours at the SAPS Ekurhuleni District Excellence Awards after 17 years of service, earning 15 accolades along the way.
Germiston SAPS administrative clerk Sanie Kgomo was named person with disability of the year at the recent SAPS Ekurhuleni District Excellence Awards 2025/26.
The ceremony saw Kgomo claim top honours in the disabled category. Having finished as the runner-up in her last entrant year, she returned to the podium to secure her winner’s trophy, bringing her home collection to a total of 15 accolades earned over her 17 years of service.
Kgomo, who will officially mark her 17 years in the police service next April, lives by a philosophy of hard work.

Her journey follows a hit-and-run incident while on duty during the 2010 FIFA World Cup operations, which left her physically disabled.
She regularly walks the stairs up to the station’s top floor and maintains a strong commitment to her role.
“I feel excited and proud of myself and my achievements. It shows that my superiors see my work and I am doing my job well,” said Kgomo. “My commanders always commend my work. Their feedback means a lot to me as it motivates me to work harder.
Even when I don’t want to enter the awards, my commander encourages me. Like last year, I did not enter.”
Operating at the heart of the Germiston station, Kgomo handles the flow of case dockets and interacts daily with community members who visit her office to track the progress of their cases.
Her workspace also serves as a resource hub for surrounding stations, with officers frequently visiting to print essential court documents.
Beyond her station duties, Kgomo is an active participant in Gauteng’s SAPS disability management structures. She credits her colleagues and leadership for making her work environment seamless.

“I am the friendliest person at the station. My colleagues have also learned to work with me and make my job easy,” she shared.
With her latest district victory, Kgomo has earned an automatic nomination for the upcoming provincial excellence awards, which will be announced soon.
As the country prepares to observe National Disability Rights Awareness Month from November 3 to December 3, culminating in International Day of Persons with Disabilities on December 3, Kgomo hopes her story serves as an encouragement for others.
“People must know that even though they are physically disabled, the sky is still the limit as long as they get their minds right,” said Kgomo.
