Laerskool Die President winter market strengthens community ties
Learners, parents and residents gathered for a successful winter market that raised funds and celebrated community spirit at Laerskool Die President.
Laerskool Die President brought the community together by hosting its winter market on May 30.
The event welcomed learners, parents, residents and entrepreneurs for a day filled with stalls, games, food and live entertainment.
The market was part of the school’s fundraising efforts, with proceeds to support daily operational needs, including keeping the lights on and paying SGB teachers.
The day was made even more special with a live performance by Tiro, who travelled from Lesotho to support the school.

“He always comes through for us. He knows our background, and we have been on a journey with him,” said Leanne Fourie from the school.
The school also received support from Alfred Fowlds, who covered the marketing costs by sponsoring pamphlets for the event.
Through the marketing drive, the school attracted visitors from Boksburg, Pretoria, and the surrounding areas.
The market featured various stalls, including the school’s own, where sweets, face painting, and other items were available. There was also a knife-throwing game, where participants had a chance to win a smartwatch.

The school said this year’s event was better organised, with stronger marketing and a greater sense of community spirit.
“I feel this event worked much better because we had enough marketing and community spirit around it,” said Fourie.
The school added that sport has played an important role in strengthening its relationship with the community.
The rugby team, known as Alpha, and the girls’ netball team, known as the She-Wolves, worked hard throughout the year and helped build a strong bond among the school, learners, and parents.
“I also feel that through our sports, we managed to get in touch with the community and build a bond with them. With the parents’ support, we developed a bond that goes beyond academics,” said Fourie.

The school’s netball team made history this year by winning their netball league for the first time in 10 years. The rugby team also drew attention, with teams from various areas wanting to play them.
The school said it is now seeking sponsors to help improve its netball and soccer fields. It also received sponsorship for netball bibs this year, which the school believes helped boost team spirit.
Earlier in the year, the school also hosted its inter-house athletics. As part of its ongoing changes, the school translated its motto into English and changed it to “Rise Above”.
The school said it has worked hard to change perceptions and improve learner discipline.
“As a school, we have worked very hard, not only to change how people see our school, but also to improve the discipline of our learners,” said Fourie.
“Learners are encouraged through a credit system, where they earn recognition for good behaviour and effort. Some learners also get the opportunity to enjoy special moments such as coffee days with the principal.”
The market not only raised funds for the school but also showed the growing bond between Laerskool Die President and the community it serves.
“We thank everyone who came to support our winter market, hoping to see you again in our next event,” said Fourie.
