What kind of recycling strategies do you think need to be introduced in our communities?
Graduates in the Coca-Cola Beverages South Africa’s Schools Recycling Programme share their views on what recycling strategies should be implemented in South African communities.
Austin Masilela: “Recyclers need to be given the opportunity to sort waste before it is dumped at landfills. For this to be achieved we need community involvement.”
Sphiwe Mathabela: “We can establish swop shops in our neighbourhoods, where even children can trade in waste in return for cash vouchers. This incentive will develop cleaner cities.”
Madiafani Tshigoda: “We need people to sort their waste according to the type of waste it is and know whether or not that waste is recyclable or not.”
Nokubobga Mnyango: “A course outlining the needs and benefits of recycling has to be introduced in primary schools so children can grow up to become adults who recycle.”
Wayne Barton: “Education is the most important element in getting communities to start the conversation about recycling and to help recyclers to collect and sell waste correctly.”
Sthembiso Mvubu: “Each household needs to learn how to separate their waste and each community needs a reputable glass recycler which will pay collectors for their efforts.”
