Alcohol Abuse

My letter refers to another letter previously published on this page about alcohol abuse among young people.

Please allow me to also add my cent’s worth to the topic about what I think the Minister of Health Dr. Zweli Mkhize should do to curb the abuse of alcohol in the country.

He should take a cue from what former minister in the same portfolio, Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, did when she banned smoking in public places.

Alcohol is predominant cause of chronic pancreatitis

The action by the former minister has borne good results, turning many public places, including shopping centres, into smoke-free areas. The same laws must be applied with alcohol because of the way it is abused in public.

Mkhize will need the support of the SAPS to ensure the laws against public drinking are enforced. Without the police support, we will continue to experience the already escalating liquor-related crimes, and the mayhem caused by alcohol abuse.
