Annual fund-raiser for a cause

Golf day fund-raiser.

The Germiston City Sports Club, in conjunction with the Football Section and The Weedwackers Social Golf, are putting together a fund-raiser to be held at the Germiston Country Club on November 12.

The aim of the fundraiser is to help Claudia Gouws raise funds for the treatment she requires, a stem cell therapy being performed only by a specialist in Brazil.

Claudia Gouws is a young woman who lives in Edenvale and studied both graphic design and photography, only to be told that she is slowly going blind.

Essentially Claudia has been diagnosed with Stargardt Macular Dystrophy, an eye disease for which there is no cure.

Diagnosed at 22, Claudia has lived with this disease for two years. Firstly, she had to stop driving and, secondly, after landing a job at an international signage company in 2012, Claudia had to give up work in February, this year, as the flashes of colour disrupted her work.

Now 24, Claudia struggles to read, write, type and work, things most of us take for granted.

There is hope on the horizon, however: the stem cell therapy being performed in Brazil.

It could be a while before Claudia can go to Brazil, but,for the time being, she will be able to go for a local treatment which will prolong her sight until such time that she can afford to fly to Brazil for the necessary treatment.

After the success of their fund-raising efforts, last year, The Germiston City Sports Club, Football Section and The Weedwackers Social Golf, have decided to host the second annual Fund-Raiser for a Cause.

Sponsorship will be appreciated.
