Rain turns National Off-road seeding event into testing affair
Muddy conditions make for interesting racing.
The seeding event for the 2014 SA National Off-road Motorcycle and Quad Championship, held on February 1, outside Bronkhorstspruit, turned into a wet and muddy affair for some Ekurhuleni riders, thanks to the heavy rain on the Friday.
The wet weather meant that the quad competitors were faced with deep river crossings on a cloudy race day.
The day saw over 250 off-road riders from across the country competing, to determine the starting order for the opening rounds of the National and Northern Regions Championships, as well as the PS Portable Shade Gauteng Off-road Club (GOC).
There was not much difference between the riders, and a blanket of just over a minute and a half covered the top 10.
Ekurhuleni’s Ruan Roberts (Yamaha) was sixth fastest, with fellow Ekurhuleni rider Dillon Inggs (Kawasaki) seventh.
Another local rider, Darren Pienaar (Base Fit Racing KTM), was second in OR2 (12th overall), with Jono van Wyk (Brother KTM) rounding-off the OR2 podium and finishing just behind Pienaar in the overall standings.
Justin Broughton (Kawasaki), also from Ekurhuleni, finished third in the Senior Class.
Competitors in the National Off-road Championship have five weeks to prepare for the first round of the season, that will take place on March 8, in the Wolmaransstad area, in North-West Province.
